BARBADOS CROP OVER 2015!
One Love Cohoblopot or whatever you want to call it was off the chain!
Machel Montano and his band performed outstandingly for over 90 minutes in a well produced show. Edwin, Marvay, Don Trent, Kirk Brown, Hypasounds, Lil Rick, Red Plastic Bag, Peter Ram, and several other singers also represented well on the big stage at Kensington Oval to an estimated over 10,000 persons! The VIP section seemed to have at least 2,000 feters. Everybody was enjoying the entire five hour event, but especially the well choreographed session of Montano's!
After more thirty years in competitions, calypsonian Classic has finally been named the Calypso Monarch of Barbados.
The announcement was made just after one this morning at the Kensington Oval, by MC of the Pic O De Crop finals, Mac Fingall.
It was a tight competition, but Classic's rendition of his two songs, “In Bed Together” and “Something Fishy” gave him the edge with 98 points, just four more than Donella Weekes, who placed second.
Colin Spencer finished third, Hee Haw finished fourth and Adrian Clarke placed fifth.
Speaking to STARCOM NETWORK NEWS, Classic said he felt vindicated by the win.
"I would describe it in two words, at last. This is 32 consecutive years for me in the business. Every year I made a contribution, I never missed a year ... you know, win, lose draw, I take my licks. I made a lot of bad decisions over the years but I believe I have a purpose for singing for the people and I always make my contribution. I would feel validated that it paid off, not that I need a crown to validate me but I would know that my work has been recognised at the highest level," he said.

Class act!
8/3/2015
ALMOST THREE decades of consistent performances, perennial disappointments and continuous self-improvement can best describe the career of William “Classic” Waithe. On Saturday night his hard work and perseverance paid off in fine style, as he captured the coveted MQI Pic-O-De-Crop title.
The consummate performer and undeniable master of the double-entendre won the hearts and minds of the audience and the judges in two solid performances that amassed an impressive 98 points at the Kensington Oval.
The results of the competition came just before 2 am on Sunday morning, and the crowd, who were shuffling and re-shuffling their top five as they were announced by MC Mac Fingall, cheered loudly for Classic, who dethroned Ian “iWeb” Webster, whom many came specifically to see whether he could pull-off a historic three-peat.
Representing the Big Show calypso tent, Classic, who started competition back in the late 1980s, had to wait a few minutes before his first appearance because of a sudden downpour. That didn’t stop his artistic flow, as he brought a screen to the stage which cast shadows of persons “In Bed Together”, leaving the rest up to the imagination of those watching. He returned in the second half with “Something Fishy” where he, dressed as a fisherman, questioning a number of goings-on in the island at a number of public and private organisations
Taking second place with 94 points was Donella from All Stars with a powerful rendition of Rise in the first half. She told Barbadians not to give up during turbulent times. She returned in the second half with Leh He Go, depicting a familiar sight of a mother defending her son’s actions, when in fact she was supporting his criminal activity. She could only scream in horror as her son was shot down dead right next to her.
Third place went to Colin Spencer who brought to light the global environmental degradation and its impact on the ocean in The Oceans are Rebelling. His second song was It Aint Only Me. Hee Haw, who placed fourth with 70 points, took to the stage with Respect de Man, bringing to light the worrying and sometimes ridiculed topic of domestic violence from the perspective of the man. He also addressed the dangers of excessive drinking in Not Me Liver Gall.
Starting with clips from calypsonians who laid the foundation for the calypso art form, Adrian Clarke in his rendition of Real Kaiso, stressed that real kaiso was not karaoke and not just focused on one's singing ability. iWeb showed that he did not intend to relinquish his crown without a fight in What is Calypso. Coming on the stage as a musical director, he was joined by dancers that showcased ballet, modern dance and even salsa steps in their choreography, demonstrating the versatility of Calypso. The classically trained singer stopped the band, holding a note, showing that he too knew how to sing, obviously in response to his fellow competitor Biggie Irie.
Biggie Irie, as was expected, showed his vocal range and sought to teach his fellow competitors a thing or two in Singing Competition. He returned in the second half with De Big Dawg Sleeping. Enobong, dressed as the Queen of the Crop, asked pertinent questions about the future of the sugar industry in her rendition of Crop Over Without Canes. She gave another strong performance in the second half with Join De Army.
Adonijah also brought a small army to the stage with The Marching Song in the first half. He returned later singing the blues, while paying tribute to Selwyn “Blues” Knight.
Chrystal Cummins-Beckles, while highlighting a number of headlines in the media, recounted her message back in 2010 where she begged Barbadians to get on their knees and pray. She returned with Music to My Ears.
In spite of a few intermittent showers and a heavy downpour while awaiting results, the relatively large crowd on the grounds and those who preferred to sit in the stands were also treated to a night of calypso royalty. Sweet Soca Monarch Edwin performed his melodious Party of the Year, while Party Monarch Winner Peter Ram left the stadium rocking as the young and young at heart could be seen jumping and chanting to his winning All uh We. There was also a special appearance by Junior Monarch in the 13-18 category Ah-Dee-Lah who performed Remember Me and a performance from first runner up in the Trinidad and Tobago’s calypso completion Devon Seale with Soul Judges. Skinny takes sixth Power Soca crown
13.07.2015 - Lyf Compton
World recognized Soca man Gamal 'Skinny Fabulous' Doyle has captured his sixth national Power Soca Monarch title while he has won the Ragga Soca crown his first time competing.
Skinny with his 2015 song 'Mash up International' won the Power Soca crown on Saturday July 4th at Carnival City, Victoria Park. He pushed last year's winner Delroy 'Fireman' Hooper who did a song 'Lunatic' into second place. In third place was Lancelot 'Mad Skull' Gloster-Scott with 'Alyo Know me' while the veteran returnee Rondy 'Luta' McIntosh also known as the 'Crowd Motivator' was fourth with 'Charlie Charlie'.
In the Ragga Soca competition, Skinny took home the crown with 'This Island is Mine', a joint effort between him and panist Rodney Small. In second place in the Ragga Soca competition was James 'Jamesy P' Morgan who did 'Chronic Disorder'. Coming in third was last year's winner Delroy 'Fireman' Hooper who did 'Drunk again'.
During his Power Soca performance, Skinny in his usual dramatic and theatrical style entered the stage on a zip-line. The 130 pound music-man swung from the top level of the double decker pavilion in Victoria Park and landed on a raised platform on the stage, from there he went on to blurt out the lyrics to his song, dressed in a light-suit which help illuminate his performance which was complimented by choreographed dancers and fireworks.
He said that he was happy to have nabbed his sixth crown although he is thinking about staying out of the competition next year to give someone else a chance to shine.
Skinny is currently out of the country on tour. He was in New Jersey on Saturday July 11th for the Six Flags Amusement Park concert. He is fully booked straight up to October.
He will in St. Lucia on July 15th for 'Color me red', in Antigua for 'Red Eye' on July 18th and on July 19th its Barbados for 'Soca on the Hill'. July 24th he will be in Turks and Caicos, July 25th, Grenada for '10 -10 fete' then back to Barbados for 'BRC' on July 30th. July 31st is Toronto for 'Jab Jab J'ouvert'.
Skinny won the Soca Monarch competition in, 2008 with 'Head Bad', 2009 'Beast let go', 2010 'Charge up', 2012 'Monster' and 2013 'General'.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 30,2013
Wesley Singers Choir and Congregational Hymn Sing – November 10th
Bethel Methodist Church, Bay Street, Bridgetown at 5:00pm
Barbados born composer, Charles C. Cooke, will be launching his book of original hymns, “Hear, O Hear My Prayer, O Lord” , published by Xulon Press, at Bethel Methodist Church, Bay Street, Bridgetown, on Sunday, November 10 at 5:00pm. It will take the form of a congregational hymn sing and choir (Wesley Singers under the direction of Walter Forbes). This is a free event and refreshments will be served afterwards..
The hymns are written in the same classical chorale style found in the Anglican, Methodist and other hymnals.
This book of hymns has a distinct Barbadian flavour as over forty of the hymn tunes are named after places or people in Barbados. We believe this publication to be the first of its kind in the Caribbean and certainly Barbados.
His hymns have been sung at various churches in the Greater Toronto Area; the Barbados Independence Church Service at The Cathedral of St James in Toronto; Vauxhall Church in Barbados. A recent composition was a finalist in the Great Canadian Hymn Competition II.
In 2011 an anthem he co-wrote received an Honourable Mention Award in the prestigious Amadeus Choir Competition which featured entries from around the world. ( He is also the composer of the Christ Church Foundation School Song).

“Ajamu 50/30 – The Celebration’’
“Highest caliber’’ Ajamu show promised as tickets go on sale
St George’s, July 10, 2013 – Tickets go on sale next Monday, July 15, for what is expected to be one of the biggest shows of the 2013 carnival season.
The show, scheduled for the National Stadium, will commemorate a double celebration – the 50th birthday of King Ajamu and the 30th anniversary of his foray into the calypso business.
“Ajamu 50/30 – The Celebration’’ will be held Wednesday, August 7, starting 8.30 pm.
It's a production Royalty Entertainment in association with the Spicemas Corporation, and backed by sponsorship from private sector groups such as LIME and the Grenada Breweries Limited.
“Ajamu is very excited about this show which is both a personal and career milestone. He is carefully selecting his music and diligently working on all aspects of his performance to ensure that patrons receive a show that they'll remember forever,’’ said an official of Royalty Entertainment.
“Early bird tickets are $40 each and will be available from Monday at local box offices, at all LIME stores, Gittens Pharmacy in Grand Anse and at the Crochu Gas Station.’’
The concert “will be a maximum four-and-a-half hours and of the “highest caliber and will include major surprises,’’ the official said.
Ajamu – real name Edson Mitchell – is a versatile musician who has won multiple carnival competitions, including the Calypso Monarch and Road March.
For next month’s concert, he has invited several local and foreign acts – many of them former Calypso, Soca and Road March title holders.
They include reigning Grenada Calypso Monarch Scholar, as well former local champions Black Wizard and Inspector. Other Grenadians on the cast will include Eggies and Smallies.
Pink Panther, the 2013 Calypso Monarch of Trinidad and Tobago, is bringing his popular brand of music to Ajamu’s 50/30 concert. He’ll be joined by other Trinidadian greats such as Black Stalin, Gypsy, Singing Sandra and Barron, as well as Antiguan Swallow and Red Plastic bag of Barbados.
Five years ago, Ajamu also assembled a host of local and regional performers for another stadium concert to commemorate his 25th anniversary as a calypso aficionado. It was called, “Ajamu 25 – The Event’’.
Ajamu and his organising team promise that the August 7 concert "is going to be big,'' and that they will "follow the same template that was used in the highly successful show of five years ago''.
Ajamu, who will not be participating in any Spicemas competitions, says he is focusing on the 50/30 concert, and will be supporting SMC-sponsored events by making special appearances on stage.
He was one of the performers at the SMC's 2013 official carnival launch on the Carenage.
